The World Food Programme (WFP)

With 115,5 million people assisted in 84 countries in 2020, the World Food Programme (WFP) is the world’s leading humanitarian organization in the fight against hunger, providing food aid and nutritional support in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and building resilience.

While the international community has pledged to end hunger, achieve food security and improve nutrition by 2030, one in nine people in the world are still hungry. Food aid is at the heart of the fight to break the cycle of hunger and poverty.

For his efforts to fight hunger, for his contribution to improving the conditions of peace in areas affected by conflict and for having played a leading role in efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war, WFP received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020.

The African Union

For the African Union, a healthy nutrition strategy and high-level political commitment are needed to facilitate quality nutrition that will allow children to survive, grow, develop, learn, play, participate and work. An African regional nutrition strategy has been developed by the AU Commission and provides general guidance and defines interventions aimed at eliminating all forms of malnutrition, promoting food security and sustainable food systems on the continent.

Aspiration 1 of the AU’s Agenda 2063 aspires to a prosperous Africa based on inclusive growth and sustainable development. Food fortification is at the heart of the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and sectoral programmes, policies and strategies to improve the nutritional status of populations.

The African Regional Nutrition Strategy (SRAN 2015-2025) favors fortification and supplementation as an integral part of a holistic and multisectoral approach to support the acceleration of nutritional action. This orientation is reflected in the Malabo Operational Action Plan 2017-2021 under the third pillar: eliminate hunger in Africa by 2025.

The West African Health Organization (WAHO)

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is an intergovernmental organization created on May 28, 1975. Its objective is to promote and coordinate economic and political cooperation between Member States.

The commitment of African countries to nutrition has resulted in the adoption of mandatory or voluntary regulatory frameworks at regional and national level. For example, harmonized fortification standards, through the Technical Committee for the Management of Harmonization of Standards (ECOSHAM), are in force within ECOWAS. These efforts are accompanied and supported by all stakeholders, through the implementation of national multisectoral nutrition plans and platforms.

The West African Health Organization (WAHO), the specialized health institution of ECOWAS, has a Regional Strategic Nutrition Plan 2017-2025 which will be an integral part of the future Regional Strategic Framework for Food and Nutrition Security of ECOWAS. The two regional structures work to ensure that the right to food is at the forefront of the agendas of high-level meetings of ECOWAS and its member states, as well as the solid integration of nutrition into national and regional policies, plans and budgets of agricultural investment.
